Maruf’s Paintbrush
Every eight years, Maruf Miramatov travels from Tajikistan to Boulder, Colorado in order to restore and maintain the Dushanbe Teahouse. Originally a gift in the Sister City exchange program following the Soviet occupation of Tajikistan, he leaves behind his wife and children, one just a few months old. Miramatov spends six months at a time maintaining the work originally done by his grandfather, and teaching the local community about the intricate painting and woodcraft techniques needed to restore and maintain the building.
